Malaysia is only hours from Perth with many West Australians travelling to Kuala Lumpur, Langkawi and Penang for their winter escape. Malaysia has many other great tourist locations catering for all styles of vacations from the high end 5 star resorts to something a little simpler.

Located halfway between Kuala Lumpur and Port Klang is the modern Malaysian township of Bandar Sunway with many high quality hotels, amusement park, shopping mall and public attractions catering for the modern western tourist. As with most of the South East Asian countries located near the equator, the wettest months of the year are October through to December with daily temperatures averaging around the high 20’s all year round making it perfect for relaxing by the pool with your favorite cold beverage.

Booking your Sunway Hotel accommodation is simply a few clicks away. You’ll be able to find the exact accommodation for your taste and budget by using the online booking site Traveloka.com who offer no booking fee, various payment methods and easy to compare and book in conjunction with one of the more reputable travel review sites like Wikipedia or even Google.

One of the biggest attractions to travelling to Malaysia is the food. Bandar Sunway is no exception with an amazing choice of meals that are affordable, including Chinese, Malay and Indian. Typical Malaysian food can be found in restaurants, stalls and hawker centres but as the area has a high student population so are major fast food outlets like McDonalds, KFC, Burger King and Subway.

The innovative Sunway Pyramid Mall was Malaysia’s first themed mall and also Malaysia’s first shopping mall with an indoor ice skating rink. The mall is easily identified by the giant lion at the entry, faux Egyptian walls and as the name implies a large pyramid. The entrance is joined by two domes, one the Orange Atrium, is bright, warm and radiant, like the sun and the Blue Atrium in shades of blue reminiscent of the water of the Nile River. Inside along with the skating rink is a cinema complex, bowling alley and numerous shops and dining options.

Taking full advantage of the tropical rainforest climate and located in the heart of Sunway is Sunway Lagoon Theme Park. What was formerly a Tin mine and quarry is now a multi zone themed water park, with 80 attractions, some of the biggest rides in Malaysia, water slides and the largest man made surf beach in the world. Ranked as the fifth Asian top water park Sunway Lagoon also features an interactive wildlife park.

Nearby is Genting Highlands where you can take a cable car ride and take in the natural beauty of the region’s rainforest.

Sunway has two large universities, Monash and Sunway along with some private colleges and notable schools so is recognized as the higher education hub of Malaysia.

Just some of the other local attractions nearby include  the Blue Mosque, Theau Hou Temple, KidZania Kuala Lumpur. Getting around Sunway is fairly easy either by the free shuttle bus, local bus service, taxi’s or if you’re feeling energetic most sites are only a short stroll away. Some of the further attractions may be better visited by taxi, bus or train.

Bandar Sunway is a safe, secure and friendly place located just 18kms from Malaysia’s capital, Kuala Lumpur in the well populated area Klang Valley. Bandar Sunway has a good transport infrastructure, with a modern network of highway and air links via Kuala Lumpur airport 40 minutes away. Singapore is less than a 30 minutes plane ride away and Thailand just one hour making Bandar Sunway an ideal stopover for a few days or an ideal base, being central to other larger cities.

Bandar Sunway offers travelers a different option for their layover if they aren’t interested in spending their time in Kuala Lumpur. Bandar Sunway is also a great jumping off point to other Malaysian cities and islands, and its proximity to Kuala Lumpur’s international airport makes Bandar Sunway a convenient base to explore other locations in Asia .

i consider malls such an American thing — and I don’t like them here! So it’s hard to contemplate visiting one on vacation. But that lion is pretty impressive! I’m not sure this would top my list of places to go in Malaysia, but I’m glad you enjoyed it.

  3. I’m lukewarm on KL as a city and I’ve only been to Sunway Pyramid once, but I agree that Malaysian food is amazing! I prefer the street food though – much cheaper and tastier. Probably not healthier, though..

People in Australia have the blessing to live relatively close to this beautiful country. That is great! I have never heard about this area of the country but it seems like the food options are just as good as in other most well known cities.

I didn’t realize you are so close to Asia, Lyn. Now I get it, that’s why you go there so often. For us, from Los Angeles, Asia is quite a log journey. Sunway Lagoon Theme Park seems so beautiful. I hope to visit Malaysia someday.

We stopped at Port Klang on a cruise earlier this year and decided not to take the 2 hour bus trip into KL, and because we didn’t know about this place we stayed close to the port. I wish I had known. We also stopped at Penang and Langkawi which were both interesting places. I have spent 24 hours in KL during a stopover to Thailand years ago and found the food and shopping in this city to be incredible. I could easily return to Langkawi but I’m not sure about Sunway. They are big on the cable cars in Malaysia I found.

Sounds like a similar cruise we did a few years ago. I experience my first and last fish foot spa whilst in Malaysia.

I live in Subang Jaya, which is just a 5 minutes drive to Sunway and the township has really boomed. Sunway Lagoon is a family favorite but the mall, Sunway Pyramid, is like any other mall in Kuala Lumpur when it comes to shopping and food. If you want auhentic Malaysian food, best you hit the streets!
