Why you should choose a cruise from Sydney

Thinking about a cruise and not sure where to go? The choices are unlimited. It doesn’t matter if you are a first time cruiser wanting to test the waters on a short break or a seasoned cruiser wanting another trip of a lifetime, a cruise from Sydney will tick all the boxes.

Imagine, sailing past the truly iconic Sydney Opera House as you join the sailaway party onboard, soaking up the breathtaking views, surrounded by the lovely setting and sparkling waters of the Sydney Harbour.

First though, you’ll need to decide on a cruiseline and select a ship to sail onboard. There are a lot of options to explore. Choose from Royal Caribbean, Carnival, P&O, Celebrity, Holland America, Cunard, Princess and many more. I would recommend to research and review the ship to take the journey on, looking at the size of vessel, dining options and features. Celebrity Solstice, Explorer of the Seas, Pacific Eden, Sun Princess or even Queen Mary 2 are some of the choices of ships sailing regularly from Sydney, each with their own features. For us Queen Mary is beyond our current budget so the obvious choice is one of the Princess fleet having been on five previous cruises with them.

Princess, is the third largest cruiseline with ships that sail to a wide range of exotic destinations and for a mid-priced cruiseline their service is exemplary. Some cruiselines also offer theme cruises, like comedy, rock n roll and food and wine cruises. And depending on the time of year a Christmas or New Year’s cruise may be something of interest.

All these choices and we haven’t even explored the destinations yet. If you are after a short getaway you can look at a relaxing few days out to sea and return or a quick trip to Brisbane, Melbourne or Tasmania. If you are looking to sail for a couple of weeks you can discover the wonders around the Australian coast, New Zealand or many of the islands of the South Pacific. Those you have have more time to explore further there is Asia, Hawaii, Europe or even a world cruise.

Another consideration with a cruise departing Sydney is that Sydney is the only port in Australia that has two dedicated cruise passenger terminals. Overseas Passenger Terminal (OPT) at Circular Quay and White Bay Cruise Terminal, Sydney’s newest passenger terminal just 6km’s from the CBD. Apart from taking note which terminal your cruise departs from, one point to consider is if you are sailing on a larger ship you will sail from OPT which does not bring you under the Sydney Harbour bridge. A smaller ship, like Princess’s Dawn Princess we sailed to New Zealand on, departs from White Bay and offers the magnificent experience of sailing directly under the impressive bridge which adds to the atmosphere from the moment the ship departs.

Imagine the excitement of boarding, getting straight into relaxing cruise mode with a cocktail in hand. Along with other passengers up on the top deck soaking up the awe inspiring views. It couldn’t be a more lovely setting, sailing past the Sydney Opera House and the city’s brightly lit skyscrapers, past Luna Park and sailing under the spectacular Sydney Harbour Bridge into the sunset, on your way to your chosen destination.

I think it would be great to take a cruise form Sydney. I will be happy to sail into several Australian ports of call. I have seen some itineraries that make it to New Caledonia. That would be awesome.
