The jewel in the crown

With the official opening only 4 days ago, this 500 room hotel is the epitome of luxury and we got to stay there this weekend. The rooms themselves boasting panoramic city views are like everything in this hotel, on a grand scale. You could easily think with the size and opulence we were in Singapore or Dubai, but we were just a short distance from home, in our beautiful city of Perth, Western Australia.

Crown Towers is Perth’s newest, largest and most luxurious hotel and we were lucky to be attending a gala function at the Crown Towers Ballroom so decided to treat ourselves with an overnight stay in six star luxury.

At a cost of $650 million and taking four years in the making, the Crown Towers are breathtaking and have set a new standard for hotel luxury, service and quality. Perth’s largest hotel, it also offers the largest ballroom and premium resort facilities and is a huge step forward for WA’s tourism. Crown Towers is designed for the high-end tourism market and a world class development. Perth is now very well placed, with the nearby Perth Stadium, the opening of Elizabeth Quay earlier this year and announcement earlier this month of the direct flights from Perth to London.

The 500 room hotel has guest rooms with Darling Ranges views, room service and opening midweek specials from $338 a night to two storey Chairman’s villa, complete with grand central staircase, wrap around balcony and full butler service at $25,000 a night and everything in between.

As we arrived, we pulled into the Valet Parking aisle where we left our vehicle, through the revolving doors to be greeted by a huge lobby. The intent of this place is clearly high-end. With the scale of the lobby, the 7 metre high ceilings and spectacular chandeliers we felt certain we were going to enjoy staying in the pinnacle of luxury. Everything here will surely surpass the most seasoned traveller’s expectations.

But there is no tacky opulence, these grand chandeliers, though huge and dramatic remain somehow understated and elegant in an area so large. The eye catching pieces are no light weight, made with 20,000 metres of chains and weighing 3 tons, the ceilings had to be specially reinforced to support them. The ceiling is a woven design blending in with the travertine stone, marble, neutral tones and textures of the many design details. Everything is so striking, yet subtle and spacious.

Our check-in was very efficient and soon we were swiping the elevator to access the 10th floor. Our room is a Premier King room fit for a King and we were not disappointed. Upon entering the room we immediately breathe in the luxurious feel and drop our luggage to the floor. We head across to the huge floor to ceiling, wall to wall window and soak up the glorious view. In front of us is the breathtaking view of Perth city’s skyline, the Swan River and Crown’s signature pools. What an amazing place for visitors to Perth to sit and relax overlooking the Swan River and the iconic Western Australian sunset. After we catch our breath from the view we look around the room. I’m not sure how to describe the style, minimalist but very warm, inviting and elegant. Everything is neutral, textured, with a splash of blue. But the standout is the lighting.

The minibar is pretty impressive too, no miniatures here, but four half bottles of Jack Daniel’s Whiskey (my favourite), Ciroc Vodka, Johnnie Walker Black Label and Hippocampus Dry Gin with an ice bucket we can fill right across the corridor. There’s also a Nespresso machine for our heart starter in the morning.

And did I mention two televisions? One large TV on the wall can be viewed from the chaise lounge or bed and the other whilst enjoying a deep soak in a bubble bath. Yes, we have a bathtub and separate shower, with plenty of shower gel, shampoo and conditioner. They have provided shower cap, emery board, cotton buds, make up remover pads, hair tie, mini brush/comb, toothbrushes/toothpaste, razor and shaving cream, even a cloth and shoe polish. There is also ample fluffy face washers, hand towels, bath mats and four (yes four!) very large fluffy white towels. We thought this was great considering we also had two lush bathrobes and slippers.

I can just picture myself now, wearing the slippers and robe, relaxing on the chaise, Jack’s in hand, enjoying the sunset. But not tonight. Time for us to glam up, Steve dons his tux and I frock up, grab our invites and head down to the huge Ballroom for a Gala party.

At what we’d seen of the hotel so far we’d expect every aspect of the night to be flawless and once we enter the Crown Towers Ballroom we see this too delivers. The scale and lighting here are dramatic and the evening was nothing short of amazing.

On our way back to our room after party we notice the hotel staff are putting up a Christmas tree in the lobby. Can’t wait to see it in the morning.

One last glimpse out the window for a late evening view over the city and its into bed for me. It was disappointing to note that our room has missed the turndown service so no late night choccies on the pillow and water on our bedside tables for us.

View from our room at night

The view next morning is nothing short of spectacular. Nespresso coffee, shower and we head down to the Epicurean for our buffet breakfast. Oh my gosh! Where to start. In prime position overlooking the resorts pools, guests choices begin with an unparalleled array of Western and Asian cuisine. There are so many choices showcasing local produce starting with four culinary stations, to watch the chefs prepare and cook. It is a feast for the eyes (and for the bellies). Choices like Asian dim sum, a tandoori oven for authentic flavours of India, the pastry cube, a charcuterie hub and the world’s tallest chocolate fountain. Um, you can have chocolate for breakfast right? To kickstart our breakfast we start off with a coffee, any way we like, so we each order a flat white.

Now for some food and this is where we separate, Steve heads for charcuterie corner and I’m off to the pastry cube but decide I should have some cereal first. But decide today is not the day to be an adult so it’s a bowl of Fruit Loops (Cheerio’s), followed by donuts and chocolate croissant, but I did the right thing and included some fruit, yummy cherries. There are at least four different types of bacon, a honey display with 3 different honey flavours dripping from the honeycomb, there was even coconut water and healthy green juice amongst the options for juice station, but I chose a bottle of watermelon juice. I have a small rasher of three different types of bacon, some mushrooms, cherry tomatoes and an egg before I cave and head to the chocolate fountain. I opt for two teeny churros one dipped in white, the other dark chocolate.

We decide to have a big walk around the outside pool area, thank goodness we had a late check out. We wander through the complex to the Crown Metropol next door, before heading back up to our room to pack and check out.

On our walk we pass the many dazzling array of five star dining like Nobu, Rockpool, Silks, Bistro Guillaume, The Merrywell, Modo Mio, the Atrium.

There is a choice of La Vie for some French Champagne and the quirky and elegant TWR for a late night cocktail. Here it is not just the chandeliers that draw my attention. By the piano is sunken seating, bird print cushions, seating and lamps with birds feet, inside is glamorous with sumptuous blue velvet sofas, and the outdoor area is great a place for a relaxing drink.

There is also the option of Crystal Club access, which includes continental breakfast, evening canapes and glittering view across the city.

World class live entertainment is just a short stroll away, within the complex, at Crown Theatre. Many world acclaimed musicals and shows here have included The Lion King, Cats, Les Miserable, Wicked and many more.

After getting our bags and our final ride in the elevator it is finally time to check out. We would have taken the express check out, but opted for the service of one of the staff so we could have one last glimpse of the lobby and check out the tree the staff were assembling last night. It is amazing and almost touches the 7 metre high ceiling. Check out was equally as smooth as our check in and as we settled the account my tax invoice was being sent to me via email.

We have one final look around this amazing lobby, it was a remarkable experience, nothing disappointed and have to say with the exception of the turndown service missing our room, the whole experience was flawless.

Down the escalator one final time, this time to the valet area to collect our car. Despite Steve asking for a yellow Lamborghini there was no confusion and our Black Rav is driven to us to continue the drive home.

On the way home we reflect on the last 24 hours, Crown Towers is one of those seductive places that will remain in our hearts long after we arrive home.

crowntowers071

Even the toilets are luxurious

When we arrived home I checked my email to verify my tax invoice and noticed a billing error. We had been charged our breakfast twice, once at the discounted in-house rate and again as a full charge back to the room. A quick phone call and it was instantly resolved, and credited back to my card.

This is a new level of luxury for Perth. The size and opulence of Crown Towers is breathtaking and six star luxury is something Perth has never seen before. This marks a huge step forward in WA’s luxury tourism offering.

Have you stayed in a six star hotel? Do you think this new hotel is as stunning as we did, would you be temped to book a room when in Perth next?

  1. It looks really great! We are due for a trip to Perth soon… It has been 7 years since the last trip so we’ll say overdue! Will definitely consider this gorgeous hotel. It really looks grandiose! Thanks for the tip!

The lobby of the hotel definitely gives the feel that you should walk out the door into Hong Kong or Singapore. But neither city would have room for that pool. And wow, what a pool! hope you really enjoyed your sojourn there.

  3. What a stunning property. Well done Perth and even more reason to visit the city, and to see you both.

  4. Wow, wow, and more wow. From your photos, I agree that they’ve struck a nice balance between luxe but not gaudy. That breakfast buffet is to die for. I would have drenched everything in chocolate.
