10 Steps to Lighter Luggage

When travelling to places like Cinque Terre and Venice it is imperative you keep the weight of your luggage as light as possible.  But how do you do that you ask?

Well here are my 10 best tips:

  1. Wear your heaviest, bulkiest items of clothing and footwear and pack a Capsule wardrobe.  15 coordinating items of clothing that create a different look everyday for up to 3 weeks and all fits in a carry on size bag.
  2. When packing use packing cubes and roll your clothes, don’t fold them. You’ll have no ugly creases and fit much more in a smaller case.
  3. Take a universal charger instead of separate chargers for your phone, camera, etc
  4. Decant your liquids, buy travel size, or take makeup and perfume samples and you can greatly reduce your volume and use your favourite brands.
  5. Don’t feel obliged to buy souvenirs everywhere you go or if you do consider posting them home. We often buy bells or magnets.
  6. Don’t take a laptop unless you need to. Take several SD cards for your camera and backup when you get back home. Use your smart phone for Google maps, checking emails, etc.  Scan and save all travel documents and confirmations to your phone or a thumb drive.  It takes up no space, helps the environment by not printing, keeps all your documents together and saves that important piece of paper getting lost.
  7. Hand wash your clothing each day or use local Laundromat at least twice a week.
  8. Take multi purpose items. Think of that oversized t-shirt as a nightie or a cover up for the beach and your scarf can double as a sarong or a wrap.
  9. Consider a point and shoot camera (or your smart phone) instead of heavy DSLR camera.
  10. Above all look for clothing that is versatile, colour coordinates with everything else, is wrinkle resistant, can be layered, and is lightweight and quick drying.

The payoff for all this is no chance of lost luggage and flights are cheaper if you don’t have checked luggage.   You can also save time by not having to wait to collect checked luggage.

I would suggest in addition to your carry on, which can be a roller or backpack, carry an anti theft cross shoulder bag with your passport, smart phone or point and shoot camera, a pen, travel size toothpaste/toothbrush, hand wipes/sanitiser, purse size moisturiser,  tissues, lip balm, etc. I pack my toiletry items into a ziplock bag and throw in a few cotton buds, emery board, bobby pins and hair ties.  I carry my cable for my iphone and earbuds on a large hair clip to stop them tangling. I also have a little pouch which holds my nail clippers spare batteries, SD cards, SD adaptor and thumb drives.

If you follow these top 10 steps to lighter luggage, next time you are running for the bus, getting your luggage up a flight of stairs or dragging luggage along the cobblestone roads you will appreciate my advice.

We cannot live without our packing cubes!! Everything has it’s place in our bags and it makes all the difference in the world. Also, hand sanitizer, adapter and locks are good must haves for every traveler.

Great advice Lyn. Souvenirs can be a real trap for one bag travel. I often take old clothes and toss them to make room for a few souvenirs or gifts. If you do get carried away with the souvenirs taking a small fold up shopping bag can be handy.

Fortunately I’m not big on souvenirs Jo, but I still need top perfect the art of one bag travel. Thanks so much for sharing the post Jo and for stopping by and leaving a comment.

  3. I am traveling lighter, but I think with these tips can get it lighter still. Love the idea of makeup and perfume samples.

We stalk the make up counter at the department stores before a trip and ask for samples of our favourite perfumes, skin care products, mascara, etc. Steve scored a few Tom Ford miniatures from David Jones once.

    These are some solid tips!
I have to admit I need to work on packing lighter, though I’ve come a long way from how I packed when I first started to travel.

Thank you Natasha, so how have you improved the most? Is there anything you have found that helped that I didn’t mention?

  5. Great tips! With each trip I try to pack lighter and lighter. We’ll see how it goes when I head to Hong Kong later. I’m tempted to just bring an empty suitcase to bring home goodies for friends and family and only pack a carry on.

Some people just seem to have a knack for it, I think they are the ones who put effort into their wardrobe making sure everything matches. The ability to wear this with that avoids having to pack a few just in case items. Have a great trip to Hong Kong Adelina and thanks for commenting.

  7. I have just a carry on too, but for my Europe summer trip, I stuffed wayyyy too much crap into it (and got even heavier after accumulating souvenirs) and it was not fun lugging it up stairs or over cobblestone! So for my SEA trip, I repacked and made it so much lighter. I got rid of like half the clothes (by finding more versatile pieces) and toiletries/makeup. Those toiletries really add up in weight!

Yes I find that with toiletries which is why I like the samples and travel packs. One good thing with SE Asia you don’t need to worry with the winter woolies and it is much more casual. Thanks for your comment Anna.

I love to travel light. It is such a burden to have to lug heavy luggage around. One of my colleagues spent six months traveling (one month in each of six big cities around the world) and she managed to do so entirely with carry-on. I’m not quite that disciplined!

Wow that is disciplined! I couldn’t do that but am getting better. Thanks for commenting Fairlie

I am a huge fan of traveling light. It makes things so much easier; there is simply less stress. Most of the toiletries one gets wherever in the world one is. I mean, people live there, as well, and this means they also need certain things. Additionally, if one packs smart enough (matching articles of clothing and similar color scheme), then it’s not difficult to simply take the smaller bag.

    • Lyn says:

So true Julia, it is amazing how much all the toiletries can weight if your not careful, that is why I love collecting samples to take. Thanks for your comments.

  10. You’ve inspired me! Each trip I say I will pack lighter….and I never do. I am going to try leaving my DSLR at home and also not printing paper as a start for TBEX this week .

Wow that is a big call to leave your DSLR behind for TBEX. Love to hear it all goes, wish I was going. Thanks for commenting.

If it helps, most non-professional bloggers can’t tell whether your pictures are taken from a DSLR or a smartphone (phones nowadays come with 13mp HD camera).. so it won’t be necessary to lug a big ass DSLR everywhere you go, unless breathtaking scenery is promised 😀

Yeah that’s my point, if you can’t tell the difference on the day to day shots, why carry it. Thanks for commenting.

  12. Esther says:

Great tips! Though I have to admit. Parting with my DSLR is not going to happen. I think investing in a 80-200 mm lense is clever, as it’s very versatile and you don’t have to carry any other lenses either.

    • Lyn says:

Well it doesn’t make any diff to me, I don’t own a DSLR, hubby is the photographer in our team. I rather take a quick point and shoot shot and keep absorbing everything around me. But I couldn’t be without my laptop. Thanks for commenting Esther.
