Get your skates on and have a go…

UPDATE – We have just been informed that this event has been cancelled for Fremantle this year.

Who is excited to see the ice rink return to Fremantle Esplanade Reserve as part of the Winter Festival again? Council has approved a proposal to hold the event over the period Friday 27th June through to Sunday 20th July 2014. After successfully holding the event in 2012, the festival is expected to draw a considerable crowd again and inject large financial numbers back into the Fremantle economy.

winter festival 01The event was successfully held at the Fremantle Esplanade Reserve in 2012 with attendance numbers estimated to be close to 100 000 over a comparable one month period. The event is expected to have a positive impact on the local economy. As a conservative guide, if event goers spend an average of $10 on other services and amenities such as parking, eating and shopping when visiting Fremantle, the injection into the Fremantle economy will be approximately $1 000 000.

The Fremantle Esplanade Reserve will be hosting one of the largest open air ice rinks in the southern hemisphere with loads of ice cool events and great entertainment for all ages. There will be fun food options, live music and international DJ’s to soundtrack your skating, and for adults a fully licensed bar.

The Fremantle Winter Festival will run from Monday 27rd June through to Thursday 20th July.  Previously the ice skating rink open from 12pm – 10pm every weekday and 10am – 10pm on the weekends. Each skating session includes skates and is 45 minutes with sessions starting every hour on the hour. While an outdoor rink means that it will be subject to the varying climate and ground conditions, the rink can operate in nearly all weather conditions. Just make sure you rug up and wear clothes and shoes to take any inclement forecasts into account. There will be lockers available on site for you to house your belongings while you’re on the ice.winter festival 02

The Fremantle Esplanade Reserve is walking distance from the Fremantle Train Station and the local CAT (a free bus service) runs on a regular schedule during the week and on weekends with stops close by.

The venue recommends that you get there 30 minutes before your session to be fitted for ice skates, and don’t worry; there are many sizes available to hire for both kids and adults. Bring your own skates if you have them, just have the site check them over to make sure they’re okay to go on the rink.
