Most romantic city for travelling couples – Part Four

We asked some of our favourite travel bloggers where is the most romantic city for travelling couples and here's their recommendations

Do you want to share unforgettable moments in the most romantic city with your loved one? We wanted to find the ultimate romantic experience in a city that would be perfect for a fairy tale date and who better to ask than travelling couples themselves. So here’s the final instalment in the recommendations by a bunch of passionate travel bloggers to consider for Valentine’s Day.

Maldives by Rahma of The Sane Adventurer

It is not wrong to say that the Maldives is synonymous to the ultimate romantic destinations in the world. The serenity, calm, and the natural beauty which the Maldives has to offer make it the ideal place to spend the Valentine’s Day with your significant other. During my visit to the Maldives with my boyfriend, we stayed at the Paradise Island Resort, which was nothing short of being a paradise itself! The resort island connects with the overwater bungalows through a wooden walkway in the sea. It was my most favorite spot on the island. The feeling of walking on a platform over the turquoise waters of the Maldives holding hands together was quite different than any other walks I have taken with my boyfriend. The place gets even more romantic as the sun goes down. Walking hand in hand to a cool breeze and the sound of small waves gushing into in the overwater platform at the night is one of the most romantic memories I have from the Maldives.

Minsk, Belarus by Roman of Visit Belarus

Minsk is a not very well-known city, but it can be a paradise for a couple especially if you visit it in summer.

Lots of green parks, charming old town and a large variety of unusual restaurants and bars will make a great impression on your soulmate.

Best things to do for a couple in Minsk is visiting its botanical garden, third largest in the world, exploring and getting lost in the streets of old town, having wine in one of the bars on a newly built embankment, and just enjoying the city vibes, relaxing and romantic.

A huge advantage of the city is that it’s much more affordable than other European capitals, so you can afford a higher-level hotel in Minsk for a lower price.

If you have more than just 2 days for your romantic getaway, I recommend you to go outside of the city and explore amazing Belarusian nature. Have a great holiday trip!

Tallinn, Estonia by Oksana of Drink, Eat & Travel

Tallinn may not be the first place that comes to mind when you are looking for a romantic city break, but the capital of Estonia is a rose colored hidden gem in Eastern Europe. Wander through the charming and picturesque Old Town with its cobbled streets, ancient churches and medieval buildings, enjoy a cozy dinner at one of the many local taverns, or get out into nature and enjoy an outdoor adventure with your loved one, no matter what option you choose, you are bound to have a great time!

One of the best (and most romantic) times to visit Tallinn is in the Winter. It may be cold, as low as 23’F in December, but it’s also when the Christmas market arrives in the Town Hall Square. The chilly weather is also a great excuse to cuddle up in one of the many cozy restaurants and cafes and enjoy some gluhwein after a stroll around the artisan shops.

This historic port city also has a beautiful coastline, perfect for a romantic walk with that special someone along the beautiful promenades or the sandy beaches just a short ride away from the city centre.

No matter when you choose to visit, when it comes to Tallinn, romance is always in the air!

Santorini, Greece by Alex of Swedish Nomad

Santorini is a dream destination for many, and the sunsets over the caldera are some of the world’s most beautiful. Not only in colors, but also for the atmosphere and scenic views.

With its white painted houses and blue roofs, this is the idyllic Greece, just as perfect as the postcards. Here you can stroll around the cobble stoned streets in Oia while enjoying breathtaking views of the sea and city.

The most romantic place in Santorini however, is a hidden gem known as Pyrgos. It’s a small village that has kept its traditional charm. Here you can indulge the most delicious food with your loved one while sitting in the most picturesque alley. Only a few tourists find their way here, and I can highly recommend to have dinner at Penelope’s.

Also, there are so many lovely hotels along the coast with perfect views and cave hotels with private pools. Santorini has it all for the perfect romantic getaway!

Stratford-Upon-Avon by Sophie of Solo Sophie

There is perhaps nowhere in England, nor indeed the UK, quite as romantic as Stratford-upon-Avon, the birthplace of none other than William Shakespeare himself. The playwright and father of modern romance stories was born in the town in the 16th-century and is now buried within the walls within the 13th-century Holy Trinity Church, which in turn, is close to the romantic River Avon.

Elsewhere in the town, you can explore many a museum, cosy pub, or even watch a Shakespearean play at the Royal Shakespeare Company. Cobbled lanes and timber-framed houses can be found in abundance, meaning that a wander around Stratford-Upon-Avon can feel akin to stepping back in time.

And that’s not all! With easy transport links, plenty of independent eateries and several boutique hotels, the town makes for the perfect weekend escape for couples. If you have a little more time, the ever beautiful Cotswolds region is only a short drive away. Home to many a chocolate box village and ancient castle, the entire area is a must-see for romantics…

San Fransisco, US by Noel of Travel Photo Discovery

San Francisco is truly a romantic city and worth visiting with a loved one. From the spectacular hills of the city with panoramic views of the skyline, San Francisco Bay and urban landscape to wandering around the stylish and vibrant neighborhoods, you can enjoy so much of the city no matter where you explore. My favorite places to actually wander are the coastal trails around the city with nature and no development allowed along the coast, you get to enjoy more spectacular views, beaches and nature in the heart of the city. The largest park in the city, Golden Gate Park oozes with romantic gardens, historic museums and stunning landscape to discover. Check out the beautiful white conservatory with colorful flowers and tropical gardens inside and outside this magnificent building.

A wonderful way to see the city would be to take any ferry ride or cruise around the bay and you’ll see the city in a different way with the skyline, hills and impressive downtown architecture and marina. A stop at any of the fun communities like Sausalito, Larkspur or even the old prison island at Alcatraz, will give you more spectacular views to frame and photograph the city. For something different, check out my post on Unique and unusual activities to do in San Francisco here for more inspiration discovering the best of the city.

Lviv, Ukraine by Kami of My Wanderlust

Lviv, Ukraine might not seem like the romantic destination at first but as soon as you get there you will see how this city is perfect for a couple getaway. Lviv is just the prettiest, with cobbled streets where you can wander around together, holding hands and falling in love with the place. It’s especially beautiful in the winter time, covered in snow that makes the city looks like from a fairy tale. Lviv is also known for its extraordinary number of charming cafes (some sources say the city has the biggest ratio of cafes per capita!) so once you are tired with exploring you can sit down and whisper to each other over the delicious cup of coffee that comes together with the yummy cake. In the evening you should visit the stunning Lviv Opera – you can enjoy a very good play for the affordable price. Since Lviv is still a bit of a hidden gem you should plan your trip there soon, before everyone else discovers this beauty!

Chicago, US by Jennifer of Luxe Adventure Traveler

The perfect date night idea in Chicago is something entirely unique to the Windy City. Imagine your own private table for two set in one of SkyDeck Chicago’s glass boxes that jut out from the Willis Tower 103 stories above the streets of downtown Chicago. The city lights of Chicago twinkle in a sea below as you enjoy a Chicago specialty, a Chicago deep dish pizza, with that special someone. With the Pie in the Sky experience, you don’t have to imagine it.

Tim, from the couple’s travel blog Luxe Adventure Traveler, hails from the Windy City. One of his and Jennifer’s first travel experience together was a trip back to Tim’s home town. Jennifer had never been to Chicago and they did all the touristy things, including visiting the observation deck on the 103rd floor of the then named Sears Tower. What better way to relive those early days of falling in love than a re-visit to the since renamed Willis Tower, only this visit 17 years later would be extra special. Pie in the Sky is a VIP experience after hours in the SkyDeck observation deck where a romantic candle lit table for two awaits. The experience includes your own Chicago deep dish pizza delivered freshly baked from Giordano’s to share as you both gaze out over Chicago far below. The wine might have to wait thanks to Chicago’s strict liquor laws, but there’s hardly a more romantic setting than being the only two people in a usually bustling tourist attraction.

Udaipur, India by Punita of 100 Cobbled Roads

Udaipur is a beautiful city of lakes in the northern state of Rajasthan, India’s quintessential land of maharajas and medieval fort-palaces. The most picturesque Pichola Lake in the heart of Udaipur is dotted with ghats, havelis, hills and royal palaces. Right in the middle of the lake is a spectacularly romantic hotel, the Taj Lake Palace. Four-acres of pure marble with opulent interiors makes it one of the most extravagant, expensive and exclusive hotels of India. To complete the romance, take an hour-long boat ride on the tranquil blue waters under a blue cloudless sky. The beige-gold stone of the City Palace bordering the lake reminds you of Venice. Breathe in the quiet grace and antiquity and fall in love with Udaipur.

Budapest, Hungary by Demi of Around the World With Her

Being in a long distance relationship means my partner and I take many romantic trips to enjoy the little time we get together. Our favorite was definitely our visit to Budapest last year. The city is very cheap, which means even those on a budget can enjoy a more luxurious or romantic hotel. The city is also famous for its baths. We spent one afternoon lazing in the steaming hot pools and using the saunas. Walking up Buda Hill is a lovely activity for couples, there are plenty of quiet viewpoints where you can take in the sight of the whole city, or simply sit on a secluded bench. In the evenings, strolling along the river Danube is a relaxing experience, and a great place to watch the sunset. As night draws in, take a seat on the opposite side of the river to enjoy the parliament building lit up in all its glory.

Warsaw, Poland by Karolina of Karolina Patryk

I’ve been married for 5 years and I can’t think of a better place to spend Valentine’s Day than Warsaw, Poland. The city has an unique history, that makes it a great destination for all the lovebirds, especially does in a long-term relationships. Right now, Warsaw is a vibrant place, a capital of Poland with a beautiful old town. Back in 1945, right after World War II, the city was almost completely destroyed. Poles rebuilt it from the scratch. That’s why Warsaw is called The Pheonix City, as it has risen from the ashes. If your relationship is not as perfect as it was at the beginning, if you want to heal a relationship crisis, then think about spending Valentine’s Day in Warsaw. This city has an amazing ability to rebuild something that seems to be unrecoverable.

Wander around the charming streets of Warsaw’s Old Town, visit Wilanow Palace, go up Palac Kultury i Nauki and fall in love with your partner again.

Thessaloniki, Greece by Allison of Sofia Adventures

If you’re looking for a quietly romantic and under the radar city, be sure to check out Thessaloniki. This city oozes with history, filled with ancient sites from the Greek, Roman, Byzantine, and Ottoman areas — yet with none of the crowds of Athens. Thessaloniki is set on the Mediterranean with a gorgeous harbor and miles of boardwalk to walk and enjoy the seaside in any weather. Art installations such as the famous “Umbrellas” of Thessaloniki liven up the gorgeous sea view, with mountains framing the horizon on the other side of the water. I love sitting with my boyfriend by the beautiful White Tower, the symbol of Thessaloniki, while watching the sun set from one of the seaside cafes (I recommend Padrino for cocktails and beautiful outdoor seating, or the rotating restaurant SKYLINE for even better views!).

When you’re tired of exploring the city, there are tons of cozy cafés in Thessaloniki where you can sit and enjoy each other’s company over a delicious cup of coffee. That’s not to mention the hundreds of unpretentious but subtly romantic restaurants and tavernas where you can eat delicious and fresh Greek cuisine with some local wine. My favorite restaurants are located in the bohemian quarter of Ladidaka and the lovely Old Town called Ano Poli, located on the top of a hill with winding roads and street art lining the walls, two of the most romantic and interesting parts of the city.

Florence, Italy by Grace of The Idyll

Florence is a city that’s steeped in romance. In Florence, evening light bathes the city in gold, couples dine in candlelit restaurants, and architectural treasures hide around almost every corner. I spent a dreamy few days here eating gelato and sipping wine, amazed at the beauty of this Italian city.

The best way to soak up the romance of Florence is to explore the city on foot. Stroll through the historical centre to Ponte Vecchio, one of the city’s most iconic bridges. Pick up some fresh bread and cheese for a picnic in the lush Bardini Gardens, before wandering up to Piazzale Michelangelo at sunset for some of the best views of Florence.

For a delicious end to your day, head to the late-night Mercato Centrale and browse the indoor stalls, restaurants, and wine bars. Or splash out on an elegant dinner with a view in one of Florence’s roof-top restaurants, like SE-STO on Arno.

Colmar, France by Victoria of Bridges and Balloons

Colmar in the Alsace region of France feels like a real-life fairytale town. As my husband and I walked through the candy-coloured town, we couldn’t get over its charm – it looks like the village from Beauty and the Beast. There are cobbled streets, pastel houses with wooden beams, and a little canal running through the centre. We went there on our last trip as a couple before getting pregnant with our son, and it was the perfect romantic getaway. And for an intimate meal for two, I recommend the garden of L’Arpege organic restaurant. And don’t miss the cute little L’Un des Sens wine bar, which is ideal for an atmospheric drink. I also recommend hiring a bike and riding to the nearby village of Eguisheim, which is even cuter than Colmar and the perfect place to spend some time together, wandering the streets and stopping for a coffee in one of the courtyards.

Cartagena, Columbia by Joanna of Lose the Map

From my first day there, Cartagena struck me as one of the most romantic cities on the planet. When you stand on the old city walls and watch the sun set over the Caribbean Sea while sipping a fresh cocktail, you will feel every inclination to hold the hand of the person nearest you.

When night comes, the city gets even livelier and, if possible, more romantic. As you walk down cobblestone streets lined by bright colorful houses in the warm summer evenings, the wind carries the sea air over the stone walls of the historic old city to gently cool you down. Once in a while, you’ll have to hop back on the sidewalk to let a horse-drawn carriage carrying a snuggling couple pass.

The city’s vibrant, late-night bars and clubs invite real romance as well, as Cartagenans are open to meeting strangers, friendly, and always up to dance. Salsa music oozes out of bars out to the plazas and streets, where you will see plenty of couples dancing the night away. Cartagena makes it very easy to step in and enjoy the dance as well!

this series is awesome . i loved this romantic thing. thanks for sharing.

  3. These all seem like wonderful places to visit. We will definitely add some to our list. One place that we visited and loved going as a couple was San Miguel de Allende.

  4. Chris Backe says:

We fell in love in Seoul, South Korea… Both teaching English, different schools, first met on OKCupid. The city itself is huge, but has lots of places to just kinda tuck yourself in / strap in and get ready for a night out…

Worth remembering that romance can be made anywhere — even the ‘unromantic’ cities — with special little things…
